Study on the influence of the content of Needle-shaped flake aggregate on asphalt concrete aggregate gradation

Abstract: To examine the influence of needle flake aggregate content on the gradation of asphalt concrete, this study employs the stepwise filling method, utilizing skeletal stability as the sole criterion for assessing the quality of the aggregate skeleton. The investigation incorporates needle flake contents of 0%,20%,25%,30%,and 35%.Specimens are prepared using a vertical vibration compaction device. In conjunction with the CBR value, skeletal density, and porosity,a comprehensive evaluation of the skeletal stability is conducted to determine the coarse aggregate gradation for each group. The aggregate gradation is designed utilizing a composite gradation design method, encompassing both coarse and fine fractions across the full size range. The findings indicate that the stability of the aggregate skeleton exhibits an initial increase, followed by a decrease,as the content of needle-like aggregates rises. The optimal stability is observed at a needle flake content of 30%,while the stability is found to be the least favorable at a content of 35%.
